Home and Garden Fulfillment for Shops with a Strong Season
Anyone selling garden products online needs home and garden fulfillment that follows the calendar rather than a smoothed monthly average. Between February and June, many shops push more than half their annual revenue through the warehouse. From November onwards the same space stands almost empty. Lufapak has worked with exactly that pattern since 1998 and spreads your goods across more than 20,000 sqm in Neuwied. The range does not make things easier. Charcoal, potting soil, trellises, solar lights and gloves differ in weight, volume and fragility, so the warehouse layout has to map that whole spread within a single stock pool. Otherwise picking falls apart into special cases. Our warehouse combines high-bay and narrow-aisle areas with small parts storage for 100,000 small load carriers.
As an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified fulfillment service provider, we calculate from your actual quantities. You receive a breakdown per activity, from goods receipt through the pick position to the return, so every cost block stays traceable back to a real handling step. That makes costs predictable in a way an own hall with seasonal staff never can be.
Neuwied sits between Cologne and Frankfurt, connected to three motorways. Shipments reach the entire German market the next day from here, which in spring decides between an abandoned basket and an order. For European shipping we also draw on the network of our British parent company.
Storing and Picking Bagged Goods, Soil and Substrates by the Pallet
Potting soil, bark mulch and fertiliser arrive palletised and leave the warehouse as single parcels. That break between delivery and dispatch is where garden products fulfillment is actually decided. We unload containers and lorries at goods-in, record every batch and book the stock in within 24 hours.
Heavy bagged goods do not tolerate arbitrary stacking heights, and a split sack rarely stays a single sack. Split bags contaminate whole pallets and create complaints that quickly cost more than the goods themselves. Items like these go into our pallet and parceled goods storage at floor level, kept apart from fragile decorative items.
Typical product groups and what they demand in the warehouse:
| Product group | Examples | Requirement in the warehouse |
|---|---|---|
| Bagged goods | Soil, bark mulch, fertiliser | Floor level, limited stacking height |
| Liquids | Plant protection, cleaners | Spill tray, CLP labelling |
| Small parts | Seeds, screws, nozzles | Small load carriers, batch reference |
| Bulky goods | Barbecues, raised beds, water butts | Freight shipping, pallet space |
Most orders mix these groups. A basket holding two sacks of soil, a watering can and a packet of seeds cannot go into a standard carton without damaging the small items. Our packing stations therefore run several carton sizes and filling materials in parallel. The packing instruction is created per order, not per item. Where weight and volume make it sensible, we deliberately split an order into a parcel shipment and a freight shipment.

Frost-Sensitive Goods Need Rules of Their Own
Seeds, liquid fertiliser and water-based wood stains do not survive a frosty night on the ramp. In home and garden fulfillment, the January goods receipt therefore decides what is still saleable in April. Our halls are heated throughout, and deliveries are never buffered outside overnight.
Plant protection products and battery tools bring their own requirements. Hazardous substances need correct CLP labelling. Lithium-ion batteries fall under transport regulations as well as battery legislation. Before a delivery enters stock, we check it in warehousing for labelling, damage and completeness.
Decorative goods and home textiles need low-dust locations, while soil and building chemicals get an area of their own. Running both on the same rack ends up costing you returns rather than saving storage. Shelf life matters for seeds, fertilisers and plant protection, so we manage those articles with batch and date references, pick by first-expired-first-out and report expiring stock back to you in good time.
Cushioning Seasonal Peaks in Garden Equipment Fulfillment
March often demands five times the picking output of December. Running that curve with your own staff means paying 12 months for 4 and still hunting for temporary workers every spring who have to be trained first. Garden equipment fulfillment spreads the load across an established team instead.
Lufapak holds over 30,000 pallet spaces for this. Space is switched on when your pre-season goods arrive and released again once the stock has sold through. You pay for occupied spaces rather than a reserved hall. That switch is cleanly covered by contract through warehouse logistics outsourcing.
A home and garden 3pl only works with transparency. Our in-house IT connects your shop and marketplaces via API, EDI or CSV, so stock, shipments and returns come together in one dashboard. Staff with 12 years of service on average know the routines long before the season starts. Give us your container deliveries and expected sales volumes a few weeks ahead and we will plan spaces and people accordingly.
What Happens to Returns After the Garden Season Ends
In late summer the flow of goods reverses. Whatever did not sell comes back. Home and garden fulfillment has to handle that wave as well as it handles spring dispatch, otherwise leftover stock blocks the space for the next pre-season.
Garden goods rarely come back as new. Soil is opened, barbecues have been used, outer packaging is missing or torn beyond reuse. We assess and document every return individually, so that by autumn you know which stock will survive into next season. Our return management gives you the evaluation per article.
Much of it is saleable again. Our teams clean displays, replace missing outer cartons, complete accessory sets and put the articles back on the shelf. Whatever will not survive the winter is sorted out. That way leftover stock costs no pallet space and does not return as a complaint in spring.
If you want to hand over your home and garden fulfillment services before the next season, talk to our team in Neuwied. Send us your quantities and delivery cycles. We calculate your quote from those figures, not from a flat rate. You can reach us at sales@lufapak.de and +49 (0) 2631 384-0.
